Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems is an applied course for students who have already mastered basic computer skills and wish to apply those skills in novel contexts with the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will develop the ability to reason spatially and analyze relationships among concepts; to capture, store, validate, integrate, analyze, and display data related to locations on the Earth; and to create, query, maintain, and modify geospatial datasets. They will learn how GIS is used as a decision-making and data management tool to solve problems in various industries and fields. Furthermore, students will use GIS software to create a spatially accurate map with data retrieved from online or locally available resources.

Program of Study Application This is an optional elective credit for students interested in the subject area as a support for their program of study in Architecture & Construction, Agriculture, STEM, or Information Technology. UTK's Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing Labs: The GIS Lab supports geospatial technologies in teaching, research and community outreach in the Department of Geography & Sustainability and the larger University of Tennessee community. The lab consists of advanced geospatial facilities, data collection and analysis instruments and expertise in spatial analysis, data management, and production of static and interactive maps. The GIS Lab offers community education programs through the Outreach and Community Engagement Laboratory.

Tennessee Geographic Information Council (TNGIC): was established in 1994 to improve the connection between the various agencies working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Tennessee.

TNGIC has an annual conference in the spring of each year. They also sponsor more localized meetings in the fall in East, West, and Middle Tennessee. At these meetings, everyone from the seasoned GIS Professional to students just entering the field to attend and participate.
