APHG is Perfect for Introducing GIS to Future Geographers!

APHG is arguably the best for introducing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) because it transforms the curriculum from a series of definitions into a living, breathing laboratory. While many subjects use maps, APHG is fundamentally obsessed with the "why of where," providing the perfect conceptual hook for GIS’s ability to layer complex data. Instead of just reading about food deserts or urban sprawl, students can use GIS to overlay income levels, transportation routes, and grocery store locations, moving from passive map-reading to active spatial analysis. By integrating these tools, the course elevates geography by equipping students with a 21st-century toolkit to solve real-world problems like climate migration or infectious disease mapping.

#1 Way to use GIS in APHG...Use GeoInquiries from Esri!

Each GeoInquiry activity now has its own webpage that includes an overview, standards, learning outcomes and the links to a teacher's guide, the map, student worksheets, student self-check, and LMS support. Start by reading the teacher's guide (the PDF). Many instructors will use the teacher's guide and the map displayed on an interactive white board - delivering the activity verbally.
